Over the years, with a dome, artificial surface, and other problems, the Kingdome became a bad venue for the Seattle Mariners. So, many individuals and organizations began working to get the Mariners a new ballpark beginning in 1992. After several years of negotiating it was decided that a new ballpark would be built. To be built next to the Kingdome, ground was broken on March 8, 1997. The ballpark followed the same neo-traditional pattern as every new ballpark built in the 1990’s. It would have a brick facade, natural grass, and a retractable roof. Safeco Corporation bought the naming to the ballpark in 1997, thus giving its name Safeco Field.

A capacity crowd packed Safeco Field on opening day, July 15, 1999. Three levels of seating extend from the left field foul pole to home plate around to the right field foul pole and into right-centerfield. Bleacher seats and a message/scoreboard are located above the bullpens in left field. More bleachers seats are located above the hitters backdrop in centerfield. Above the bleachers is the main video board. Safeco Field's retractable roof enables fans to stay try during the rainy days during the season. The retractable roof covers the ballpark but does not enclose it, giving it an open air feel. When opened the roof sits above and behind the right field seats. There are many amenities at Safeco Field as well. Games and activities for fans can be found at the Bullpen Market behind left field. The Children’s Hospital Playfield, on the Main Concourse in center field, lets kids work off excess energy on fun, baseball-themed playground equipment. A Mariners team store is also located a Safeco Field. The best views of the Seattle and Safeco Field can be found at Lookout Landing, at the end of the left field line on the Upper Deck. Since its opening Safeco Field has became a pitchers park.
